How does Cialis work?
Cialis (tadalafil) works by inhibiting certain chemical enzymes found within the body that are released and designed to break down an erection after sexual intercourse. In many patients these enzymes are released too early which result in a quick loss of erection or they can prevent the erection from being achieved at all.
Because Cialis inhibits this chemical, it stops a loss of erection occurring. To really understand how Cialis works it is important firstly to understand exactly how an erection is formed, and how it occurs in men who do not suffer from erectile dysfunction. These are the stages of an erection.
Stage One (Arousal)
Psychological and/or physical stimulation, known as arousal, activates a series of neurotransmitters within the brain which send signals throughout the body to control nerve responses, blood vessels and hormone levels. At this stage this is where most of the problems will occur, as the neurotransmitters are unable to successfully send their chemical relays to start the erection process. Cialis can combat this by inhibiting certain enzymes which work to prevent these messengers from reaching the blood vessels and muscles around the base of the penis, making an erection near impossible.
Stage Two (Tumescent Stage)
This is when an erection first becomes visible and is scientifically known as the tumescent stage of the erection process. Once these neurotransmitter messages have reached the cardiovascular system, it shifts its focus to significantly increase blood flow into the man’s penis. This in turn causes the cavernosal bodies within the penis, known as the corpa cavernosa and corpus spongiosum, to begin filling with blood which causes the penis to swell and eventually results in an erection. This stage is also reasonably prone to failure in patients suffering with erectile dysfunction as the cavernosal bodies of the penis may not fill with enough blood to make a sufficient erection, instead the penis will remain in a state somewhere between flaccid and erect which would not be suitable for penetrative intercourse. Again Cialis can combat this by allowing the blood vessels around the penis to relax and widen, resulting in an increased blood flow into the penis.
Stage Three (Maintaining the erection)
As these cavernosal bodies fill, they confine the veins found within the penis against the membranes on the inside of the penis. Blood is subsequently trapped within these blood vessels as a result, which makes the penis fully erect, suitable for penetrative intercourse. When either the sexual stimulation is stopped or following an ejaculation, pressure within the penis decreases which causes the once trapped blood to release, which in turn causes the penis to return to a flaccid state. During this part of the erection process it is still possible to lose an erection as a result of the enzyme phosphodiesterase which is released to force a penis back to its flaccid state. Cialis specifically targets these enzymes and in doing so is able to ensure the person can sustain an erection long enough to meet the needs of both themselves and their partner.
